Stemming from an idea by Paola Capata and Delfo Durante, straperetana is envisioned as a project for the reappraisal of the ancient hamlet of Pereto, in the province of L’Aquila. An unexpectedly compelling site steeped in history, Pereto is nestled on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio, lying only 70 km from Rome.
The project aims to the involve the whole town, with artists intervening in both the internal and external spaces employing an array of practices including painting, installation, photography and performance. The title ‘straperetana’ alludes to a fiercely local dimension but also an extended and amplified one. The coming together of the ancient, rural hamlet with the vision of the participating artists will generate a friction between the traditional and the contemporary.
All the interventions will contend with the conceptual and aesthetic traits of the town, allowing them to engage in a dialogue, and as such coming closer to Pereto’s history and uniqueness.
